Young infants seem to have little else on the agenda other than feeding, sleeping and making dirty nappies. However, infancy is the time to get those neurons connecting and firing. Check out these ideas for activities that enhance cognitive development in young babies:
1. Time for some chit-chat
Those seemingly one-sided conversations you have with your baby do not fall upon deaf ears. He or she is processing everything you say, learning tone and language, and learning about the world around him or her when you talk. So get chatting!
2. String up a hanging toy or mobile
You might think that those mobile toys hanging above baby cribs are just decorative, but as your baby lies and watches it move, vision is being developed, objects are being tracked, and space-depth perception is being formed.
3. Read to your baby
It’s never too soon to start reading to a baby. Babies love the sound of their parent’s voice, and before you know it, your little one will take interest in the story and the pictures too.
4. Sing and dance
Sing nursery rhymes to your baby or put on some music and sing and dance along.
5. Mirror, mirror, on the wall
Consider putting a mirror near your changing station or in the baby play area so your little one can see his or her reflection.
6. Bells and whistles
The baby rattle isn’t the most well-known toy for nothing – toys that make a sound when played with are great for a baby’s developing brain.
7. Discover the world
Bundle that little one up and go for a walk together. Explore so baby can better understand nature.
