Baby massage is a great way to express affection and love for your baby, and assists in calming and relaxing your little one. It also offers other benefits, including improved circulation and digestion.
What is baby massage?
Baby massage is the gentle, rhythmical rubbing of your baby’s body. It’s a rather simple activity, and all you’ll need are your own hands, a towel or sheet to place baby on, and some baby-friendly massage oil or moisturiser. Baby massage can be done by both moms and dads.
What are the benefits of baby massage?
Infants respond wonderfully to physical touch, and baby massage can assist in mental and physical development. It can aid digestive upsets, improve blood flow throughout the body and lead to better sleep.
How should I massage my baby?
Begin with your baby’s legs, gently rubbing the calves and thighs. Next, move to the chest and tummy area, and, keeping your hands flat, rub in small circles. Then move on to the arms and hands, gently stroking the upper arms and forearms, and using circular motions to massage your baby’s hands. Finally, turn your baby onto their tummy and massage their back, using your fingertips to make circular movements on either side of your baby’s spine.
When should I massage my baby?
Once you’ve tried baby massage a few times, try to establish a daily routine. Choose a convenient time between feeds or before bedtime. Pay attention to your baby’s cues; you will be able to gauge whether they are enjoying the massage, and what time of the day works best.
